Questions we often hear

Do I need to file a self assessment tax return?

Yes, if you are self-employed and earned more than £1,000 from it in the tax year. You may also need to file if you have other income that is not taxed at source. If you are not sure, ask on the call and we will tell you.

Does Making Tax Digital apply to me?

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax started in April 2026 for sole traders with qualifying income over £50,000. The threshold falls to over £30,000 from April 2027 and over £20,000 from April 2028. Qualifying income means your total gross income from self-employment, plus any property income, before expenses.

If it applies to you, you need to keep digital records and send HMRC quarterly updates as well as your yearly return. We can do all of it for you.

What happens if I miss the deadline?

HMRC charges a £100 penalty as soon as a return is late, even if no tax is owed, and more the longer it stays late. Interest is also charged on tax paid late. If you are already behind, get in touch now. The sooner it is filed, the less it costs.

Should I set up a limited company instead?

Sometimes. Once your profits reach a certain level, a company can be more tax efficient, but it brings extra costs and responsibilities. We can run the figures for both routes so you can decide based on real numbers.

How much does it cost?

We agree a fixed fee before we start, based on how many income sources you have and how your records are kept. You know the cost up front.
